SAYAN, LAND OF THE
SUN AND ALFAJOR
GENERAL INFORMATION
Located at 48 kms. from Huaura, North of Lima, also know as "Norte Chico".
ALTITUDE
Sayan is located at an altitude of 672 mts. above sea level.
CLIMATE
In the area the climate is tempered and hot, staying this way the whole year.
CAPITAL OF THE DISTRICT
The capital of the district is the town of Sayán, located in the Yungar region, well-known as the "Land of the Sun and of the Alfajor" in the valley of Huaura and Churin.
ACCESS / APPROACH
The North Pan-American highway allows the access to Huacho and Huaura. It has two penetration routes to the valley of Huaura:
-From Lima until Huaura (144 kms.). From there take the road to Sayán that goes to the east on an asphalted highway (48 kms.).
-From Lima go to the "Variante" (North Pan-American highway km.103) and from there take the road to Sayán (50 kms.) a dirt laminate highway.
BRIEF HISTORICAL REVIEW
The original name of Sayan was Sullan of Chacta. This town was founded by Spaniards, under the saint's invocation of San Jerónimo, in the same place that today occupies. The dominicos were the first ones in preaching the word of God at the beginning of the indoctrination process, then the Jesuit continued this work.
At the issue of the Provisional Regulation in 1821, Sayán appears with the category of a district, with its capital Sayán, the same one that is confirmed by the Great Marshal Don Ramón Castilla, January, 12 of 1857. In 1964 was built the Parish church of Sayán, in that time the population was of 1,510 persons.
ILLUSTRIOUS PERSON OF SAYAN
Manuel Tovar Chamorro. He was born May 02 of 1844 in Sayán. December 08 of 1898, he was named as the XXV Archbishop
of Lima. He died May 25 of 1907, being buried in the cemetery of Tarma, Department of Junín.
PRINCIPAL ATTRACTIONS
MIRADORES. From where you can appreciate the countryside and the town; also the towns, Cruz and Cemetery.
MUSEUM DISTRITAL DE SAYAN. It has a varied collection of ceramic of the region, it's located in the City Hall's Library.
MAIN SQUARE. Surrounded by big ficus trees and in the center of it, rises Monsignor's bust Manuel Tovar and Chamorro, favorite son of the town.
CHURCH OF SAN JERONIMO. The Patron saint of the town, historical monument in its group, presents modern architectural lines because of the reconstruction it had.
IN THE SURROUNDINGS
QUINTAY. Located at 7 kms. of Sayán, altitude 835 mts. above sea level, famous for their landscapes and wines of the region.
CAŃAS. At 6 kms. of Sayán, altitude 620 mts. above sea level, where there is an archaeological center and pre-history paintings.
ANDAHUASI. At 9 kms. of Sayán, altitude 598 mts. above sea level, it's a sugar cooperative. Picturesque town in the middle of farms.
QUIPICO. At 15 kms. of Sayán, altitude 562 mts. above sea level, where there is an archaeological remain of an administrative center of the Chancay Culture.
ADVENTURE TRAVEL
RAFTING. A short river strip of 3 kms. The long river strip is from Sayán to Andahuasi, there are certain parts, where there are obstacles and good rapids.
TREKKING. Two routes that leave from Sayán:
-The first one is of 2 days, Tres Montones - Cochacalla - Maray - Choques; and the second, of 3 days, Quintay - Jatillo - San Martin de Mani - Maray - Choques.
